On January 21 through February 29, 2008, six Lycoming County school districts along with the Head Start program
will participate in the 2nd Annual Lycoming County Fitness Challenge. This 6 week program was designed to
encourage children ages 4 and up to become active during the winter months. The concept is simple: for every
(out of school) minute of activity a student participates in they will receive one point. If a parent participates
in the activity with them their points will be doubled. Activities can include, but are not limited to just
running and walking…students can swim, dance, bike, jump rope, ski, snowboard, roller blade, play Frisbee, Active
Wii games and more. Their team sports count as well!! The points will then be tallied on an individual, classroom
and school building basis. The goal is to get children as well as their parents active during the six weeks of the
challenge and then to continue a healthy lifestyle once it is over. This project goes beyond just the activity
portion of the state wellness mandate for schools. The Challenge encourages a friendly competition against each
other as well as other classrooms and schools districts. The Lycoming County Fitness Challenge is sponsored by
the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition’s Wellness Council, and supported by a number of area businesses
and civic organizations donating both incentive prizes and cash contributions.
How it Works:
County outcomes will be reported in number of minutes of
exercise completed in this 6 week period with a class
screened with pre-and post-competition measures to determine
“classroom” impact.
About Last Year's Fitness Challenge:
Five school districts participated in the 2007 challenge documenting over
3 million minutes of exercise – with over 150 classrooms and 3,000 Lycoming County students participating in the 6 week program. An award ceremony was held at the STN Dome in Muncy,
and many prizes were awarded! Congratulations to all of the winners!
